Shopify No More

In light of the growing number of rip off reports and tales of peeved Shopify customers blazing across the internet, we’ve decided to cut all ties with Shopify, effective immediately. We started offering customized Shopify online stores as an alternative to Miva Merchant because of its appeal to highly non-techy shop owners. However, Shopify’s increasingly negative reputation has us very concerned.

Our PSD Design Shop was created with Shopify, but we decided to switch to Wordpress a few weeks ago. When I cancelled the Shopify web store, I was told it was successfully cancelled, but was subsequently charged the monthly fee after cancellation. When several inquiries requesting a refund went unanswered, I started looking around on the internet to see if this is some sort of scam. Unfortunately, I found several other accounts stating the exact same thing. I thought it was an honest mistake at first, until I read the other accounts. We simply cannot stand behind such questionable practices, and so cannot endorse their product or company any longer.

From this point on, we will be working only with WordPress and Miva Merchant for online shops. And if you’re missing our popular PSD Design Shop, no need to worry, we’re in the process of redeveloping and enhancing the shop with WordPress. We’ll have the shop back up very soon!

We will also continue to provide full support for the many clients who are already using Shopify.

Update: After publishing this post, I finally received an answer to the inquiries I sent requesting a refund. They apologized, said is was an honest mistake, and said to have refunded the unauthorized charge. I don’t know if it was this article that prompted them to finally reply to my communications, or if it’s just a timing coincidence. But it doesn’t matter, the damage has been done. The other reports of similar cases are still lingering out there in cyberspace, causing me to remain too suspicious of Shopify to work with them again. As such, we’re still disassociating completely with Shopify, effective immediately.

Yeah I read the same thing on other blog. That they charge you anyway if you use their free trial and cancel before its used up. Got to be careful who you give your credit card to these days. Once they have it there’s nothing you can do about it.

That’s funny you said that, audo. Because I am going to the bank tomorrow to have a new card issued just because of this. Someone else wrote that they’ve been charged for three months of service after cancellation. I don’t want to deal with that.

I dont know what you alls problem is with shopifay. I used them for a long time and have no problems. Miva Merchant is the worst shopping cart ever made. You cannot even resize the images in Miva Merchant. I am not a photographer or web designer and do not know how to resize images. Shopify resizes the images for you! Don’t listen to crap. Shopify is the best online store out there.

We hear what you are saying and really regret that you have had any bad experience with Shopify. This is no where near the norm. We are very open with our desire to provide the best customer service in the industry and go so far as publicly publishing how well we are doing at http://smiley.shopify.com/ .

In any case, if you have had a billing issue we have a simple policy for this which is: side with the customer unless there is obvious malicious intend. I’m looking into this to see where things went wrong here.

I honestly think that your customer service does not extend to those who wish to cancel. People are trusting your company with their person details, and to continue being charged after cancellation is unacceptable. Especially when so many people have had the same experience. It makes me wonder how many people this has happened to who haven’t spoken up online, and it seem like Shopify is scamming these people.

Wordpress does everything Shopify does anyway. And it’s free. And they don’t charge a transaction fee.

Yeah, but wordpress is open source so there is no tech support other than forums and tutorials. That’s the drawback for using open source services. Some customers want the security of having a tech support team ready to fix any errors and problems with their store.

I prefer ruby on rails for database driven applications. But if open source is the issue theres no real difference between something custom developed and something open source. At least in terms of support options. Either way you have to be able to depend on the company who developed the application, regardless of what platform it uses.
