Have you ever been handed a business card and forgot about it before you even stuffed it into your pocket or purse? Or, worse, did you throw it straight in the bin?
Conversely, have you ever picked a product off the shelf based purely on its packaging (I’m looking at you wines and spirits)?

We’ve all heard the saying, “never judge a book by its cover”, but the reality is that human nature is to do exactly that. Your eyes are almost always the first receptors to process anything, so how could one not form at least some vestige of an opinion based on visuals alone? People judge everything on appearance (to varying degrees). And in the case of your business’s printed media, it can either work for you, or against you.

So, how does one get the most out of their print media?

By making it all about the consumer. Business cards, packaging, magazine ads, catalogs, etc… all of these items are tools to attract consumers and advertise your business. As such, they should be designed around your ideal consumers, and present your business image exactly as you wish it to be seen.

Print Design that Works for You

Even though we carry the entire internet in our pockets, printed media still plays a vital role in business marketing and consumer branding.

Let’s take a look at business cards. Business cards have been used in some form or another since the 17th century, and even earlier in non-paper form. These were utilitarian cards that provided information about local merchants, shops, inns, royalty, housing, and more. These were generally handed out to tourists and newcomers, but also exchanged between locals to promote their goods and services. People quickly realized the effectiveness of printed advertisements in augmenting word-of-mouth promotion, which ultimately spawned the print advertising industry.

Cut to today, and business cards have evolved into staple marketing tools for every business. For the most part, modern business cards provide the same information as their ancestors: company name, location, services, etc. Basic stuff. But they also serve a new, vital purpose: to capture the attention and interest of their viewers, and aid in the branding process of consumers. It’s no longer enough to simply present your information; it’s all about how it’s presented.

We live in a digital world where everything about a business is easily accessible with just a few taps. As such, the first responsibility of any printed collateral is to capture the viewer’s interest. Otherwise, it will meet it’s fate in the trash bin without ever having had the opportunity to promote your business. This is why business cards, packaging, flyers, printed adverts, brochures, etc. must be engaging.

Back to judging books by their covers.

This truly is the nature of the consumer. We try to be open minded, but we’re far more dubious when it comes to opening our wallets. As with digital media, printed media should work for your business, piquing the interest of your ideal consumers, forming a relation, and appealing to who they are.

Consumers take notice of businesses that put effort into their marketing materials. By providing something meaningful, consumers know that you are invested in gaining their endorsement, and that you care about what they want. This concept is how brand loyalty and organic consumer promotion starts, and effective print media facilitates this process.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that every business must incorporate elaborate, costly print marketing campaigns. Although, if you have the budget, it’s a fantastic way to delight your consumers. What this all really means is that when you have your print collateral created, have it professionally and thoughtfully-designed, with your consumers in mind. Whether it’s a business card, product packaging, magazine ad, etc., show your consumers that you care about them. It’s as simple as that.
